Susquehanna county

dirt bike-tour June 7-8 2003 :

100 miles through sightseeing spots of Susquehanna county in 2 days. June 7 and 8th. Starting point is Hallstead at the Mc Donald's parking near the bridge. 7:30 A.M. Departure 8 A.M. If you want we will drive your gear to the campsite at the Quest Center

We will cover approximately 60 miles the first day and 42 the next dayy and camp at the Quest Center. The cost is $25 for a collective dinner and breakfast and a schwagg.*

The history of this county has been named after the Susquehannocks, who used to be a native american tribe well versed in warfare with its tall sized men. They profited from the fur-trade and acquired even canons at some point from the English and Dutch in exchange for fur.

Later Sullivan launched a crusade against indian tribes in the north supposedly allied with the British, to fight for the new American frontier.

Then this area was part of the underground railroad so-called safe territory for slaves escaping from the south.

Not long ago, we saw the area south of here (Scranton and Wilkes-Barre) booming as coal-mining was started.

All this varied and wild history is still to be felt here, with ancient arrow points near the Susquehanna river, African-American cemetaries, underground railroad barns and more&ldots;

The itinerary will take us to the breathtaking views at Elk mountain, through old railroad beds, to a beautiful waterfall, Salt springs, the ancient Owego turnpike without leaving out Montrose, the seat of the county.

We invite everyone to join in this challenging and fun weekend. E-mail mark@juventina.orgg

This is the map of the planned bike-tour Susquehanna. The northernmost point is Hallstead, the eastern-most point is Starruca, the southern most point is I-81. The westernmost point is Forest Lake. The graph below indicates the elevations from Uniondale to Susquehanna river and back passing the Quest Center. The highest point is at Elk mountain 2111 ft. And the total climb is, believe it or not, 9000 ft.!

The map does not depict exactly how the route is going, but it will be +- 100 miles all together. The beginning will be easy on the rails to trails to Uniondale and Elk mountain, then crossing I-81 to Brooklyn and the Quest Center. Here we camp overnight and continue the next day to Montrose on the rails to trails, Forest Lake and Silver springs. From there a quick jump over the hills to Hallstead.
